Who the woman gynaecologist at Cosmic Women’s Hospital in Naroda is, when she consults, and what every woman patient is entitled to ask for at any gynaecology visit in India.
Asking to be seen by a woman doctor is one of the most common requests our reception takes, and one of the least often said out loud. Some women ask because of a first internal examination, some because a previous one was handled badly, some because their family expects it, and some for no reason they feel like explaining. None of those reasons has to be given. At the desk or on the phone, “I want to see the lady doctor” is a complete booking instruction.
This article sets out who the woman gynaecologist at Cosmic Women’s Hospital is, which sessions she consults in, which parts of your care can be with her, and five things any woman patient in India is entitled to ask for — whichever hospital she attends.
Who the woman gynaecologist at Cosmic is
Dr. Bhargavi Khatri — MBBS, MS Obgy (Gold Medalist), FRM — is Consulting Obstetrician-Gynaecologist and Infertility and IVF Specialist at Cosmic Women’s Hospital, and leads the hospital’s IVF programme. She consults Monday to Saturday in the afternoon and evening sessions, and performs ultrasound scans herself during those sessions, so a woman patient who wants both her consultation and her scan done by a woman doctor can have that in a single visit.
| Doctor | Consulting sessions (Mon to Sat) | Usually seen for |
|---|---|---|
| Dr. Bhargavi Khatri MBBS, MS Obgy (Gold Medalist), FRM |
1:00 pm – 4:30 pm 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm |
General gynaecology, infertility and IVF, pregnancy care, ultrasound, caesarean and delivery, D&C |
| Dr. Rahul Khatri MBBS, MS & DNB Obgy, FMAS |
10:00 am – 1:00 pm 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm |
General gynaecology, high-risk pregnancy, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery |
Which parts of your care can be with a woman doctor
It is worth being clear about this, because a hospital that promises more than it can deliver loses your trust at two in the morning.
Your consultations, your follow-ups and your ultrasound can all be with Dr. Bhargavi Khatri. That is a matter of booking her session, and there is nothing unusual or difficult about arranging it.
For an operation, which surgeon operates is decided by what the operation needs. Fertility procedures within the IVF programme are performed by Dr. Bhargavi Khatri, and so are caesarean sections, deliveries and D&C — so for most of the operations a woman patient actually comes in for, a woman surgeon is already the one operating. Advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery is Dr. Rahul Khatri’s sub-specialty, and the few cases better done robotically are operated by him at Apollo Hospital, Gandhinagar, as there is no surgical robot at Cosmic. A theatre also holds an anaesthetist and nursing staff. If you would like a woman doctor to see you before and after the operation, or a woman member of staff to stay with you in theatre until you are asleep, say so at the consultation — that can usually be arranged while the date is being fixed.
An emergency at night — bleeding in pregnancy, labour that starts early, severe pain — is attended by the doctor on duty. That is a rota, not a judgement about your preference, and it is the one part of this that no hospital can promise in advance.
Five things any woman patient can ask for
These are not special requests and they are not particular to this hospital. They apply to any gynaecology consultation in India, and a patient who knows them walks in on steadier ground.
| What to ask for | Why it is reasonable |
|---|---|
| Another woman in the room during an internal examination | At Cosmic a female attendant stays with you throughout — you do not have to ask for her. Practice varies between hospitals, so it is worth checking wherever you are seen. |
| To be told what the examination involves before it begins | An internal examination should never be the first thing that happens. You can ask what is being looked for, say you would rather not have it today, or ask for it to stop once it has started. |
| To know who will do your scan and who will operate | The person who consults is not always the person who scans or operates. It is a fair question and it has a short answer. |
| Consent that covers only what you agreed to | In Samira Kohli v. Dr. Prabha Manchanda (2008), the Supreme Court held that consent must come from the patient herself, and that consent given for a diagnostic procedure does not authorise the surgeon to go on and perform additional surgery in the same sitting. Anything that might become necessary should be discussed with you beforehand. |
| Your history kept confidential | Clause 2.2 of the Indian Medical Council ethics regulations makes confidences entrusted by a patient confidential, with narrow exceptions set out in clause 7.14. This covers what you say as well as what is written down. |
Scans, and the one thing that is never done
Pelvic and obstetric ultrasound is done in-house, and Dr. Bhargavi Khatri performs scans during her own sessions. You are entitled to ask what is being looked for, to have the findings explained in plain language rather than in report abbreviations, and to take the printed report with you.
The sex of a foetus is not determined at this hospital, and is not disclosed on any request. Prenatal sex determination is prohibited by law in India under the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994. Please do not ask our doctors or staff for it.
If you are coming for fertility care
Fertility work at Cosmic is led by Dr. Bhargavi Khatri, so a woman who wants a woman doctor for infertility treatment is already in the right session. Two practical points. First, bring your partner to the first fertility visit — roughly half of the answer sits with the male partner and a semen analysis is done in our own laboratory, so a couple who come together usually leave with more of the picture than one who comes alone. Second, we do not publish success-rate figures for our own clinic: the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 restricts how ART clinics may advertise, and a figure means nothing without the woman’s age band and the type of cycle. Our article on IVF success rates by age sets out those figures with their sources, and do you actually need IVF goes through the simpler treatments that come first.
What a visit costs
| Consultation | Fee | On Wednesday |
|---|---|---|
| New case, general gynaecology | Rs 500 | First consultation free |
| New case, infertility | Rs 1,000 | First consultation free |
| Follow-up | Rs 300 | Charged as usual |
| Ultrasound | Fee |
|---|---|
| Pelvic (gynaecological) ultrasound | Rs 1,200 |
| Obstetric ultrasound | Rs 1,200 |
| Colour Doppler | Rs 1,500 |
Laboratory tests and procedures are quoted at the desk before anything is done. A fuller account of what a first appointment involves — what to bring, when in your cycle to come, how long it takes — is set out in your first visit to a gynaecologist.
